Besides eating extra fiber and protein during the day of the party, another thing that works well for me is to load up on some strenuous exercise in the morning when I know I may be tempted to over-indulge at the dinner party. This gives me the two-fold advantage of having a calorie deficit going into the evening. It also puts that memory of how good a healthy body feels fresh in your mind, making it more difficult to brush off the long-term benefits of feeling good in favor of the short-term benefits on a second helping of pumpkin pie.
